Adam's Castle is a three-piece instrumental band comprised of pianist Sami Jano, bassist Eric Adams, and drummer Zach Eichenhorn. A distinctive songwriting element sits at the core of the music, often times the anchor for adventures into odd time signatures and heavy syncopation.
Central to Adam's Castle’s sound is a focus on groove first. Unlike numerous math-rock pioneers that have come before them, there is an emotional connection to this music, a relationship with the listener that seeks to make them move before making them think. If the music doesn’t move the listener, then what is the purpose of understanding its’ nuance?
While complex changes and expanded musical sections certainly have their place in Adam’s Castle's music, the interplay between the three members resembles more closely the dynamics of a three piece rock outfit than it does a group exercise in prog chops.
The songs are often complex and hard-hitting, yet palatable to listeners of varied genres. Adams' bass consistently creates the head-nodding groove, perfectly complementing Jano's dissonant piano that drives the primary structure and melody of the songs. Eichenhorn’s drumming acts as a third lead instrument, effortlessly accenting the myriad of notes, still allowing the bass and piano to sit out front when the part needs room to breathe.
The same song can be heard to make one dance as easily it is fitting for a rainy Sunday afternoon. There is music that requires a particular mood of its listener, and there is music that presents itself as an expression with no intent upon the listener. Adam's Castle falls into the latter category, with the only intent being to present a mood that the listener can accept in his or her own way.
Adam’s Castle's new LP, Deathless, is now available on Triple Down Records. The album is a limited edition CD pressing with individually numbered, silk-screened packaging.
